Hévíz: The Unique Thermal Lake That Exists Nowhere Else in the World

Hévíz is a small spa town in western Hungary, just 6–8 km from Lake Balaton. It is world-famous for the Thermal Lake of Hévíz — the largest natural thermal lake suitable for swimming. This natural wonder combines powerful healing properties, stunning beauty, and the opportunity to bathe year-round.

Why Is Hévíz So Unique?
- The largest biologically active thermal lake in the world — its surface covers about 4.7 hectares (47,500 m²). Depth ranges from 2 meters near the shore to 38 meters in the central funnel-shaped part, where the main spring emerges.
- Natural water circulation — water flows from a deep cave at 38 meters at a rate of about 410 liters per second. Thanks to this, the entire volume of the lake renews completely every 3–3.5 days (some sources say 48–72 hours). This keeps the water exceptionally clean and rich in minerals.
- Stable temperature year-round — in summer the water reaches 33–38°C, while in winter it never drops below 22–24°C. You can swim even on cold days, and a light mist often rises above the surface, creating a magical atmosphere, especially in winter.
- Healing sulfur-rich water and peat mud — the water contains high levels of sulfur, calcium, magnesium, carbon dioxide, radon, and other minerals. At the bottom lies a thick layer of therapeutic peat mud used for wraps. The lake has strong anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, vasodilating, and regenerative effects.
- Special ecosystem — the lake is surrounded by a 60-hectare protected forest. Red and blue Indian water lilies (lotus flowers) bloom on the surface — they were planted here over 100 years ago. The water contains beneficial bacteria, and the mist above the lake helps reduce pollen, making it ideal for people with allergies.

Treatment in Hévíz is particularly effective for musculoskeletal disorders (arthritis, rheumatism, osteochondrosis), chronic inflammations, skin conditions, gynecological issues, and neurological problems. Main procedures include bathing in the lake, mud therapy, massages, underwater jet massage, and drinking mineral water.

What to See and Do in Hévíz
- Thermal Lake Bath — the main attraction. Swim in the open thermal lake with wooden platforms, relaxation areas, saunas, and spa facilities. The lake is surrounded by a beautiful park with giant trees, including swamp cypresses and metasequoias.
- Hévíz Protective Forest — perfect for peaceful walks and relaxation in nature.
- Town center — statues, sculptures, historic buildings, and a local farmers’ market with fresh Hungarian products.

What to Visit Nearby
Hévíz has an excellent location — many interesting places are within a short drive:

- Keszthely (6–8 km) — the nearest large town on the shore of Lake Balaton. Don’t miss the magnificent Festetics Palace — one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Hungary, with luxurious interiors, a famous library, and a lovely park. Also worth visiting is the Lake Balaton Museum.
- Lake Balaton — the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe. Enjoy swimming, boating, cycling along the shore, or simply relaxing with beautiful views.
- Kis-Balaton (Little Balaton) — a protected nature reserve ideal for birdwatching and eco-tours.
- Wine regions around Balaton — excellent opportunity to taste Hungarian wines, especially the famous whites from the Badacsony area.
- Other thermal baths and spas in the region (for example, Kehida Thermal Spa).

Hévíz is perfect for combining medical treatment, relaxation, and cultural sightseeing. Many visitors come for 1–2 weeks for a full healing course, while others spend a weekend simply enjoying the unique lake and surroundings.

Best time to visit?
All year round! Winter is especially romantic because of the steam rising from the water. Summer is warmer with more activities on Lake Balaton. The most comfortable months are May–October.

Hévíz is not just another spa resort — it is a true natural miracle where geothermal energy that has been accumulating for thousands of years helps people restore their health. If you are looking for a unique experience that combines therapy, natural beauty, and tranquility, Hévíz is definitely worth visiting.
